Foyer Federation Practice Event 2011

Shaping the Big Society

Cork Foyer was well represented at this year’s residential practice event held at Aston Business School, Birmingham. The theme, “Big Society” aimed to offer delegates a wide perspective on the role of young people in shaping their communities, through the lens of Foyer Federation projects and programmes.

Besides offering a great opportunity to network with numerous other Foyer projects, the two day event was packed with a variety of workshops to capture the imagination of those in attendance.

Cork Foyer delegates learned of other projects that had put the “Big Society” principles into action by using the assets of their residents to deliver inspiring practical community initiatives. Cork Foyer residents, Aaron Herrera and James O’Brien also seized the opportunity to showcase the work of the Cork Foyer during the innovations fair. Their presentation included a live broadcast of a short film made recently by Cork Foyer residents and Cork Community Television.

Having made several positive links with Foyers in England and Wales who wish to jointly organise a future initiative together, we left the event feeling that we had gained some great ideas for the future.
