Cork Foyer benefits from Currys “Switched on Communities” Scheme

Foyer residents benefit from national partnership between the Foyer Federation and DSGi.

Cork Foyer, the City Council’s innovative project which provides accommodation, training and support for 18 young people who have found themselves homeless or at risk of becoming homeless has recently received electrical goods from their local Currys store to complement and add to training courses available in the facility.

Within weeks of becoming a fully accredited Foyer, through the Foyer Federation’s national accreditation programme, Cork Foyer was able to take full advantage of funding generated through a national partnership between the Foyer Federation and DSG international (owners of Currys and PC World). DSG international’s ‘Switched on Communities’ programme supports disadvantaged groups in the community through the provision of technology and training. From the Goods in Kind scheme, the Foyer was able to purchase essential resources such as a digital camcorder and lap top computers to enhance their life skills programme for the residents.

Barry Waddingham, Foyer Manager said: “We are extremely grateful for such a kind donation. These resources can be used in organised workshops or by individual residents themselves to help with their college assignments, or simply recording memories of the good times they had whilst living at the Foyer. Using such equipment will help develop communication skills and make learning a far more enjoyable experience.”
