Cork City Council’s ‘Homelessness: An Integrated Strategy for Cork 2005 – 2007’, identified the need for a Foyer, to support homeless young adults in an integrated and holistic manner, progressing from dependence to independence in order to regain their rightful place in the local community.
Having established the Foyer Support Service, Cork Foyer arranged an Away Day at the Commons Inn on 2nd May 2007, involving key Stakeholders, Foyer staff, Foyer residents and members of the Management Committee. The collective experience, expertise and vast knowledge gained from the participants, will be used to broaden the Foyer’s 2008 – 2010 Development Plan, to the benefit of all stakeholders concerned, particularly residents of the Foyer and future users of the service.
During the past 18 months, Cork Foyer has moved on substantially, providing an opportunity to celebrate many early achievements, including hosting a variety of training programmes, such as the 14 week Lifeskills programme facilitated by the YMCA, the ECDL and Cookery classes facilitated by the VEC and many more, not to mention the variety of voluntary work including Creative Writing, Arts, Hip Hop and so on. Cork Foyer are also thrilled that 7 residents have successfully moved on from the Foyer, as part of a planned resettlement programme. In continuation of the celebrations, Cork Foyer are pleased to have completed their first Annual Report 2006, that contains a wealth of information about the first chapters in the story of Cork Foyer – “a place to live and learn” (Foyer Federation).
